  • We are pleased to announce that we have hired an Office Administrator, Laura Keirn-McCreanor. Laura grew up in Ohio and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree from Kent State University. For 11 years, she lived in Hawaii while she was earning her Master’s in English and starting her family. She is married to Rev. Brian J. McCreanor, current Navy Chaplain stationed at MCRD. Both she and her husband are lifetime members of the Disciples of Christ denomination. They have two children: Tennyson (age 3) and Jennings (age 6), as well as a boxer dog named Zipper. Her regular office hours will be Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9:30 – 2:30, beginning Tuesday, February 19. Be sure to stop by the church office when she’s here so you can give her a personal welcome

  • At 3 pm on March 3, 2019, The Japanese American Historical Society of San Diego, San Diego JACL, the San Diego Buddhist Temple and the Poston Community Alliance group will present the film titled "For the Sake of the Children". The film examines the aftereffects of World War II internment not only on those interned but also on subsequent generations.

A panel discussion moderated by filmmaker Lane Nishikawa will follow the screening. The panel will include executive producer Marlene Shigekawa and cast members: Amy Tsubokawa, Patty Tsubokawa Reeves and Diane McCabe. The film will be shown at the Ultra Star Theater at the Hazard Center. Admission is FREE but seating is limited. See flyer for more details.

  • POVUCC will have a food booth again this year at the 14th Annual Cherry Blossom Festival held at Balboa Park's Japanese Friendship Garden on Friday-Sunday, March 22-24. There are still a lot of opportunities to help! This is our only fundraiser for the year, so please sign up for 1 or more shifts on the sign-up sheets located on the Fellowship Hall table (with the blue tablecloth). We will be making fried wontons (NEW) and teri dogs, and also selling mochi ice cream - back by popular demand. This is a really fun church-wide, fundraising event for POV and a great way to learn more about the Japanese American cultural ties our church has in the community. Any questions? Please see Steve Sato, Roni Mizoguchi, or Coreen Fujinami.

  • Uptown's Annual Walkathon will take place on March 16, 8am-11am. Walk and continental breakfast $30. Donations of any size gladly accepted.

  • The POVUCC music department will be hosting a Choral Vocal Building workshop February 22-23. There will be a Dinner Pitch-In & Social on Friday evening from 7-9pm, and the workshop will take place on February 23 from 10am-4pm, with Elizabeth Kluegel-Niblock facilitating. Andy met Elizabeth through the UCC Musicians Association. She has been a church choral conductor for 16 years and a private voice teacher for over 20 years. All who are interested in improving their vocal performance are invited to attend. Please RSVP to Andy no later than February 10 so he can order music for you. Thank you, Andy, for creating this wonderful opportunity for POVUCC and other local churches!

  • Our neighborhood Soul Food groups will begin a 6-week study of the “Green Faith” book beginning the week of January 27 (with one exception--see below). It's not too late to sign up! Books are $15 and will be available on Sunday.
