Our Worship Service
Each Sunday, Pioneer Ocean View UCC gathers to worship as a faith community. Our service is based on the traditional Christian liturgy of the Christian church and includes congregational singing, prayer, time for children, special music by our choir and/or soloists, and Scripture-based sermons that relate to our daily lives. Even those without a traditional church background will feel comfortable worshipping at Pioneer Ocean View UCC. To learn more about our worship service and listen to recent sermons, click here.
Choral and instrumental music has an important place at Pioneer Ocean View UCC. Our choir prepares anthems for worship services, as well as for seasonal events, under the direction of our wonderful choir director, Andy Mathews. Our gifted accompanist, Rick Parks, blesses us with his instrumental music each week. We also have guest musicians, like our Ukelele Ensemble, who share their gifts with us in worship from time to time.
Just as Jesus broke bread with His Disciples, we honor this tradition and break bread with one another during the first Sunday of every month.
Every Sunday, we begin worship as one body. After the Children's Moment, children and youth K-12 join their teachers to continue worshipping and learning in the Benson Building.
A room for infants and their parents is available just behind the Sanctuary for nursing, diaper changes and toddler time.
Devices to amplify sound are available for thos needing assistance with hearing. Our restrooms are ADA compliant and our chancel is wheelchair-accessible.
After the Service
One of the values adopted by our church is to extend an extravagant welcome to all! Food is a big part of our extravagant welcome. Just as a family prays together and eats together, Pioneer Ocean View UCC holds a fellowship hour after our Sunday Services every week where members of our Hospitality Ministry greet us with a meal that they prepared in our very own church kitchen. We spend this time catching up with fellow church members and getting to know our new members. We encourage all to join us in this wonderful time of fellowship.
DURING THE WEEK
Our worship does not end with an at "Amen" at the end of the service! We continue to support each other through our Fellowship Hour and weekly ministries such as our Prayer Groups, Bible Studies, Fellowship groups, service projects and Board meetings.
WHAT TO WEAR
Each person is encouraged to wear what they are comfortable wearing. There are no dress codes. On any given day you will see everything from Hawaiian shirts to sport coats and ties.
We are located in a quiet neighborhood in the Clairemnt area of central San Diego. We are blessed with a beautiful site on a hill that overlooks Mission Bay and the mountains to the east. Our site consists of our mid-century modern Sanctuary designed by famed architect Lloyd Ruocco, a newly remodeled Fellowship Hall, a building for meetings/classrooms and our professionally landscaped Point.
We have a dedicated parking lot on site. A ramp and stairs are available directly from the parking lot. Also, a golf cart with driver operates every Sunday to transport members and guests from the parking lot directly to the Sanctuary.
